PortMiami is getting the World’s largest shore power system. Plans for a shore power system at PortMiami that will significantly reduce air pollution are moving forward, when the contractor received the go ahead for the built-out. Denmark-based PowerCon announced this week that it had been awarded a contract to build five shore power systems at PortMiami. It will be the largest shore power system in the world upon completion, expected by the end of the year. “PortMiami is establishing itself at the forefront of pushing the shore power with this project,” the company said.

Royal Caribbean, Virgin, MSC Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival terminals will be served by the five new systems. Ships will be able to plug into the electric system while at the port, rather than running engines and emitting pollutants.

The Port of Miami, styled as PortMiami, but formally the Dante B. Fascell Port of Miami, is a major seaport located in Biscayne Bay at the mouth of the Miami River at 1015 North America Way, Miami, FL.

PortMiami is Miami-Dade County’s second most important economic engine contributing $43B annually to the local economy and supporting more than 334,500 jobs in South Florida. It’s recognized as the Cruise Capital of the World and Cargo Getaway of the Americas. Cruise-passengers’ number 252,099 (which reflects the 2021 COVID-19; Cargo TEUs 1’254,068).

Its communication with the recent creation of the PortMiami tunnel has improved access to Miami International Airport and the rest of the city, as the new tunnel facilitates moving traffic and saving time, serving as a direct connector.

Port Miami cargo has been growing after the COVID-19 slowdowns and is expected a conservative growth of 3% year-over-year.
