Chicago-based Golub & Co. has proposed a mixed-use project on part of the former Johnson & Wales University Campus in North Miami.
Since the nonprofit university closed its campus in 2020 and sold it off, developers have been working to build on its piece by piece. Propco LW LLC, an affiliate of Golub & Co., paid $10 million in 2021 for the 3.3-acre site at 1160 N.E. 127th Street and 12600 N.E. 17th Avenue Old Town Capital Partners and Lester are partners with Golub & Co. in the project.
It was proposed as a 19-story project featuring 450 apartments, 12,960 square-feet of commercial space and a 685-space parking garage. The developer said that the project would generate $106.9 million in short term construction wages and other construction expenditures and support 67 jobs upon completion.
The project would have a pool and amenity deck on the 6th floor atop the parking garage, plus another amenity deck with a pool on the 12th floor as a rectangular cutout in the middle of the building. The architect Solomon Cordwell Buenz designed the building.
In November 2022, the North Miami Planning Commission tied 3-3 on a vote of whether to recommend the proposal to the City Council. A City Council vote has yet to be scheduled.
Meanwhile, the Related Group already has approval for an apartment complex on the former Johnson & Wales campus for rental units in Miami-Dade County having posted among the highest growth in the Nation, developers are eager to move forward with projects here.
